There is a need for volunteers who can help the PORGAI group (doing lambadi embroidery work in Sittilingi, Tamilnadu) with an exhibition at Dastkar, Manpho Convention Centre near manyata tech park, between Aug 7 to 16th. The exhibition is of apparels, home furnishings and accessories adorned with unique lambadi embroidery. The volunteers will be required to man the stalls along with the representative from PORGAI group and help them in selling items to customers.

They need volunteers for the two weekends Aug 7,8 and Aug 15,16 .

Please get in touch with Dr.Sukanya (sukanr@gmail.com or 9980142265) .

If you are not able to volunteer, please do visit the stall and spread word.

Porgai group is a society of about 60 women belonging to the Lambadi community. The Lambadi women here stopped doing their Traditional embroidery 2-3 generations back, since they gradually stopped wearing their traditional dress. For the last 5-6 years, they have joined together, learned the craft and revived it. This will give the women independent income being in the village and also prevent migration.PORGAI is an effort to revive the art of traditional embroidery of the Lambadi women,in an attempt to provide livelihoods for women in the Sittilingi valley. This craft is the pride of the Lambadi people, and hence their cloth products with exquisite embroidery on contemporary cloth products is called ‘Porgai’ (meaning pride in the Lambadi dialect).

The PORGAI group is supported by the Tribal Health Initiative (THI). Tribal Health Initiative is a health programme in Sittilingi valley and Kalrayan hills in Tamil Nadu (www.tribalhealth.org). We have a secondary level hospital run by the trained local women and men. We also have a community health programme run by the trained local women. We firmly believe that for a community to be healthy, it has to work at the determinants of health, since agriculture, nutrition, food security as well as employment opportunities leading to economical stability are essential to health.
